Ms. Jill Jacobs went to the New York University Langone Medical Center for an operation in 2009 to remove a fibroid from her uterus. When she left, she had no uterus at all.  She filed a lawsuit as a result.

A judge in the case found the hospital guilty of malpractice. Ms. Jacobs initially sued the hospital in 2010 for $5 million. She claimed that the surgeon, Bhavana Pothuri, was not authorized to perform the hysterectomy that she had done.

As a result of the operation, Ms. Jacobs went through instant menopause. She was only 48 at the time of the operation. She claims that she was forced to sign a statement before her procedure that gave permission to the doctors to remove her reproductive organs if they found signs of cancer. Apparently, a blood test done the night before her surgery showed that she had no signs whatsoever of cancer.

Since the surgery, she has become depressed. Her self-image allegedly suffered dramatically and she often remembers the horrific events of being kidnapped and raped when she was only twenty. She also suffers from other health issues, including abdominal and urinary problems.

Ms. Jacobs believes that the hospital and the surgeon violated her body.

The Manhattan Supreme Court jury awarded Ms. Jacobs $142,000 in damages, namely $132,000 for her pain and suffering in the past, and another $10,000 for future pain and suffering. The verdict is said to be “insulting” and “shockingly low.” Ms. Jacobs’s lawyer plans to appeal the decision.
