An 18 year-old boy tragically died after doctors failed to diagnose swelling in his brain or conduct an MRI, despite the fact that the boy exhibited severe medical symptoms warranting an MRI.
The boy had gone to a Massachusetts emergency room with severe headaches, vision problems, difficulty walking, and slurred speech. Doctors also found that the boy could not even remember what day or month it was. The boy spent several days in the hospital, where he was unable to walk without assistance and required narcotics to mitigate his headaches.
After three days of medical treatment, the hospital discharged the boy, despite the fact that doctors had not reached a diagnosis. The following morning, the boy’s mother found him in in his bed, unconscious and covered in his own vomit. The boy was rushed back to the hospital where doctors conducted an MRI, which showed significant swelling in his brain. Doctors soon declared him brain dead, and the boy was removed from life support soon thereafter.
The boy’s family settled its wrongful death and medical malpractice lawsuit against the hospital for $2.5 million.
