Massachusetts Woman Dies From Septic Complications After Knee Surgery.

A 70 year-old woman died from extensive septic complications of perforated gastric ulcers after her knee surgery.

The case recently settled just before trial for an undisclosed amount.

The woman had a history of multiple gastric ulcers that were treated at the same hospital. After an arthroplasty procedure on her left knee was performed on November 17, 2009, the woman complained of persistent stomach pain. An examination revealed intra-abdominal bleeding and acute renal failure.

After multiple abdominal surgeries, the woman died on December 30, 2009.

Plaintiff’s expert was prepared to testify at trial about multiple deviations from the standard of care by the physicians, including the failure to locate the source of the bleeding prior to the ruptured ulcers.
