We entrust medical professionals with the most important thing in life, namely our wellbeing and the wellbeing of our loved ones. Because of this, we hold them to a higher standard of care than we would for most other professions. Indeed, when doctors make a mistake, it can very easily be a life or death situation. If a medical professional makes a mistake, and you or a loved one is seriously injured, you may be able to file a personal injury lawsuit against the doctor and the medical center responsible for your pain and suffering and other damages. The experienced medical malpractice attorneys here at our Boston, Massachusetts law firm have decades of experience fighting for our Massachusetts clients and can help guide you through the complicated litigation process.
The family of a Scranton, Pennsylvania mother of two, who died five years ago from an allegedly misdiagnosed heart problem, settled a medical malpractice lawsuit against the Geisinger Community Medical Center (“GCMC”) and two of their physicians for $3.5 million. The lawsuit accused GCMC and their physicians of failing to properly diagnose her heart condition, which ultimately resulted in her death. Kristine Coleman, 41 years-old, was a dietary technician at Allied Services, and had been admitted to GCMC after complaining of severe left shoulder pain radiating down her left arm.
A cardiac evaluation was ordered, including a cardiac catheterization, to determine whether any of her arteries were blocked. However, Dr. Huang allegedly canceled and never rescheduled the catheterization, even though it was arguably the only procedure that would have shown definitively whether Kristine Coleman was suffering a myocardial infarction, namely a heart attack. She was then discharged from GCMC but was brought back to the hospital by ambulance four days later with shortness of breath and pain in her left shoulder and arm, where she later died.
