On November 9, 2012, Dr. Kristin Howard, from Wellesley, MA, visited a Whole Foods store on State Street. She then hit a delivery truck in the parking lot. After hitting the truck, Howard reversed her motor vehicle and then hit a fence. She drove forward a little, and then backed into the fence a second time. Howard next sped forward into a granite post, launching her motor vehicle into the air, scraping a tree and hitting a Mercury driving on the street. The Mercury was pushed into the next lane of traffic traveling in the opposite direction. A truck and trailer both made contact with Howard’s motor vehicle.
The driver of the Mercury sustained serious personal injuries and was taken to the Newton-Wellesley Hospital, Howard’s place of employment. Cameras captured Howard flying her car into traffic from the parking lot.
When police interviewed Howard after the auto crash, they detected an alcoholic odor and subjected her to multiple sobriety tests, all of which she failed. Police charged her with driving under the influence of alcohol, driving under the influence of drugs, reckless endangerment, leaving the scene of an accident, leaving property damage, possession of a class C substance, and possession of a class E substance.
While this story is extreme, it illustrates how driving under the influence can affect so many people. Have you recently been involved in a car accident?
