Going to your primary care physician is one thing.  Going to see a specialist for a particular health problem you have is another thing entirely.

Like any other professional, medical doctors and surgeons may specialize in specific areas, such as orthopedics or obstetrics.  Because the human body is so complex, it is necessary to have doctors who can offer in depth expertise on certain procedures and remedies.  Cardiology is no exception to this rule.  Heart health, especially in today’s health-conscious society, is very important.  Many patients seek the help of cardiologists to get the best possible treatment for probably the body’s most important organ.  Occasionally, however, some cardiologists provide their patients with substandard care.  Some even take advantage of their patients’ trust and vulnerability and subject them to unnecessary surgeries.  When cardiologists are caught in such an act, they may be liable for significant damages done to their patients.

Just recently, two cardiologists from Lake County, Indiana were accused of malpractice by 28 patients.  Each of the plaintiffs, filing their own separate complaints, allege that Dr. Arvind Gandhi, Dr. Satyaprakash Makam and Dr. Wail Asfour conducted unnecessary heart surgeries that cost them thousands of dollars.  In addition to unnecessary heart surgeries, the plaintiffs allege that the defendants improperly ordered pacemaker implantations, angiograms, stenting, and cardiac defibrillator (ICD) implantation.  In some of the lawsuits, the plaintiffs allege that the unnecessary procedures caused wrongful deaths.

A formal complaint was also filed with the Indiana Attorney General against members of the medical group that these doctors belong to, namely the Cardiology Associates of Northwest Indiana, PC.
